Solar PV Rebate

The Victorian Solar Panel Rebate

Victorians are lucky enough that they have a State government rebate available for Solar, on top of the Federal government "Solar rebate".

The Solar Panel Rebate is a 50% discount off the total cost of a Solar installation, up to $1,400 in rebates plus the option of an interest-free loan of the same amount to help cover the cost of installing solar panels—and we’re here to break down exactly how you can take advantage of it.

Unlike the national solar rebate, this rebate has strict eligibility criteria and you'll need to submit an application to confirm you qualify.

Is the Solar Victoria Rebate Worth It?

Absolutely! If you qualify and you were already thinking of getting solar, it's another discount you can claim to reduce the price you pay. YES, this rebate stacks on top of the Federal STC rebate.

Let’s make sure you qualify…

To qualify for this rebate:

  • You are the owner-occupier of an existing property or the owner of a home under construction where the system is to be installed.

  • The combined household taxable income of all owners is less than $210,000 per year.

  • The value of the property is under $3 million (for an existing home or when construction is complete).

  • The property address has not previously received a solar panel (PV) or solar battery rebate under this program.

  • The property address has not had a solar panel (PV) system installed in the last 10 years.

  • You must choose an approved solar retailer and only use approved products.

If there is an existing solar system on your house but it is more than 10 years old, you can either replace or expand the existing system and claim this rebate on the installation.

Also, if you received this rebate and/or loan for one of your previous houses, you can apply for this rebate at your new address as an owner-occupier AS LONG AS your new house has not had a solar installation with this rebate.

If I'm Eligible, How do I Claim The Rebate?

Before you can get the discount off your solar installation, here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Get a Written Quote

Once you’ve picked a retailer, they’ll upload a formal quote directly to Solar Victoria’s portal. You’ll receive an email confirming the submission—hold tight for this before proceeding.

Once you receive the email, there will be a link to complete step 2.

Step 2: Prove You’re Eligible

Time to upload your documents! You’ll need:

  • Two forms of ID: Driver's licence, medicare card, Australian passport, Australian birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate, foreign passport with valid Australian visa, immicard.

  • Proof of income: Recent Notice of Assessment, Pensioner concession card, Centrelink payment summary or Statutory declaration. (depends on your situation)

If you're earning a taxable income from work, you must use a Tax Notice of Assessment for proof of income.
If most of your income is from Centrelink, you can either use a Centrelink payment summary or a Pensioner concession card if you have one.
If you're not earning any taxable income, you must submit a signed Statutory Declaration that states you did not earn a taxable income for that financial year.

Step 3: Await Your Golden Ticket (a.k.a. the QR Code)

Once approved, you’ll receive a unique QR code via email. This code is your installation “passport.” Your installer must scan it on-site before any work begins, which locks in your rebate.

Step 4: Install Within the Deadline

  • Existing homes: 120 days from application approval.

  • New builds: 270 days from application approval (gives builders flexibility).

Miss the window, and you’ll forfeit the rebate—so mark that calendar!

Step 5: Pay the Balance & Repay the Loan (If Applicable)

The rebate is paid directly to your retailer, slashing your upfront cost. If you took the interest-free loan (up to $1,400), repayments start 30 days post-installation at $29.17/month over 4 years—cheaper than most streaming subscriptions!

The loan isn’t automatic—you have to opt in during the application. This is a no-interest loan with no fees whatsoever, making it a no-brainer if cash flow is tight.

Will this rebate end?

Like all good things, this rebate will come to an end eventually. When exactly we don't know, but in 2018 it was announced as a 10 year program and it has been 7 years since then so we're definitely closer to the end than the beginning.

The goal of this rebate was to increase the adoption rate of renewables and electrification, and it has definitely sped things up. One piece of evidence to support that is the fact that the rebate has already decreased various times since 2018. This shows that thousands have already made the most of the incentive and Victoria is on track to reaching it's sustainability goal by 2028.

So if you haven't got solar yet and are thinking of doing so, just remember:

  • Stick to authorised retailers that can offer this rebate.

  • Submit documents promptly to get the application approved.

  • Stay on top of Solar Victoria so you can get your system installed as soon as possible!
