Warranty Fine Print

Missing critical warranty terms could leave you thinking you're covered when you're actually not. Understanding the difference between manufacturer and workmanship warranties is essential.

What It Looks Like

“You're covered by a 10-year warranty, you'll be fine.”

Red Flag: They didn't specify if that's the manufacturer warranty or the workmanship warranty, or what each actually covers.

“If anything goes wrong, just call us.”

Red Flag: What happens if the company goes out of business? Many solar companies don't last 10 years.

“The warranty covers parts and labor.”

Red Flag: Check the fine print - many warranties only cover parts, leaving you to pay for removal, shipping, and reinstallation.

The Real Risk

There are typically three separate warranties: the manufacturer's product warranty, the manufacturer's performance warranty, and the retailer's workmanship warranty. Each covers different things, and the fine print often excludes common scenarios. If the retailer goes out of business, their workmanship warranty goes with them.

Cost Impact

$2,000 - $8,000 for out-of-warranty repairs

Time Impact

Weeks without a working system during claims

  • Orphaned systems when a retailer closes have no workmanship warranty backup
  • Many warranties require professional maintenance to remain valid
  • Performance warranties often have complex claim processes with limited payouts

How to Protect Yourself

Get all warranty documents upfront

Request the full warranty documents for both equipment (manufacturer) and the installation (retailer) before signing.

Understand what each warranty covers

List out specifically what's covered by the manufacturer vs the workmanship warranty, and what the exclusions are.

Check the retailer's track record

Research how long the retailer has been in business. Look for established companies with a track record.

Ask about orphan system protection

Some manufacturers offer enhanced warranties if the retailer closes. Ask if this protection is available.

Document everything

Keep all warranty documents, invoices, and installation certificates in a safe place for the warranty duration.
